Spoons-Kent 1Almost every nation on earth has carved spoons, as part of a rich history of folk arts, or arts of the common folk.  Join us for this beautiful and peaceful craft in our spoon carving workshop with master carver, Kent Young.  You will leave with the spoon you carve in class.

First and foremost participants will learn carving tool safety and proper tool technique. We will also discuss popular carving woods and how to work with the grain of the wood while carving. This workshop will shed light on the hard work, patience and satisfaction involved with completing a functional spoon. There are no shortcuts, but participants will find that the process is faster than they may have imagined, with a little focus and as your wood carving technique improves.

All tools and materials provided.  A complete list of tools and useful resources will also be provided to each participant, to facilitate your journey as spoon carvers.

Instructor Kent Young is a wood carver, but more specifically a spoon carver. He’s been doing this old and mostly forgotten craft for the last 35 years! An artist living in a remote part of New Hampshire taught him the craft of spoonmaking, and he’s never stopped. Spoons are old tools, predating forks by thousands of years. Kent feels that spoon carving is physical and mental, and the required focus has a Zen like quality to it. Using only hand tools he can carve anywhere… Kent is the owner and operator of Young Spoons, where spoons are functional art and made to be used everyday. A good wooden spoon is essential to a well equipped kitchen, and to this end, his favorite wood to carve is cherry. It holds up well to kitchen use, wears well, and turns an aged brown like a good leather.  Kent’s spoons are a joy to reach for in your kitchen.

Please note: This is an outdoor (some shade) workshop.  Please dress appropriately for the weather.

No experience necessary.  Please bring a snack or sack lunch, all other materials provided.  For participants 14 and older, minimum of 3 participants, maximum of 6.  Please note, this class has a limit of 6 folks, in order to facilitate the hands-on instruction needed.  Pre-registration is required.
