It is our great pleasure to announce the first official folk dance offered at the folk school! In collaboration with the kindred spirits at the beautiful and historic Altona Grange, our plan is to offer monthly folk dances for the community (you!) on the last Friday of each month, excepting the months of June and December.
Like your grandparents' barn dance without the barn – old-time squares & reels, maybe a waltz or polka as well. All dances taught and walked through. All ages welcome. No partner or previous experience needed. Live music featuring Jason Dilg and Gina Andreucci!
We need your support to make this happen! Please consider dusting off your dancing shoes and coming out for the first dance on Friday, March 28th from 7-9pm. All dances will be fun and accessible to dancers of all sorts...bring a friend and experience the joy of this old-timey tradition. Check out this video for a taste of the dancing!
All dances will be called by Master Dance Caller, Chris Kermiet. Chris is one of the finest old-time square dance callers in the United States and has been featured at numerous festivals, workshops, and dance events across the country. He has been calling and teaching traditional American squares and contras now for over 35 years. During the past 15 years, he has also created choreographies for a number of performing groups and theater companies. In October, 2009, he was celebrated as a “Living Legend of Dance in Colorado” by the Carson-Brierly Dance Library at the University of Denver.
Musicians Jason Dilg and Gina Andreucci perform traditional tunes from Appalachia and the American Midwest, as well as neo-traditional interpretations of ballads. Each came to this music through the summer fiddler's conventions in the South, and carry these rich traditions forward. Gina founded the Firing Line String Band, and Jason joined last year as the guitarist.
No experience necessary. All ages are welcome. Children ages 10 and under are free. Concessions will be available for those with a sweet tooth, all proceeds will go to the Living Arts School and the Altona Grange.
Purchase your ticket in advance and save! $9 in advance (through Thursday, March 27th) and $12 at the door. Free admission to the first 4 folks who volunteer to bring a baked good to donate to the concessions stand.
Come one, come all!
